The National Crime Research Centre (NCRC) has partnered with Rongo university to develop a curriculum tackling media and security to curtail insecurity cases in the region.
The centre which is mandated to carry out research into the cause of crime, its prevention and to disseminate the research findings and recommendation to Government Agencies concerned with the administration of criminal justice, stakeholders and the public is geared towards equipping students to confront misinformation and propaganda which can cause violence.
Speaking during the stakeholder’s workshop to review masters and doctoral curriculum at Rongo university in Migori county, Ret. Col. Dr. S Handa said the curriculums are multi-disciplinary in nature wherein mainstream and new media technologies are seeking innovative problem solving ideas in mediation.
Dr. Handa said that it is opportune that Rongo university has come up with a programme meant to globally tackle problems of media and security.
Prof. Fredrick Ogenga, Director of Centre for Media Democracy, Peace and Security said the studies are bound out of the fact that there is a gap existing in security training when technology is involved.
He said the upcoming social media technology which is globally playing a central role in peace and security, being given minimal attention scholarly.
Dr. Ogenga said the focus of the course is also to highlight on how technology can be made useful for peace as cohesion and peace building adding that they came in to professionalize the studies since no university in the region offers the same.
Migori County government CEC members of Health Ret. Col. Kepha Nyamita praised the university for embracing security especially in Migori county which is cosmopolitan.
He said it is a good idea for the university to associate itself with specific orientation making it unique in the country and beyond.
Dr. Florence Oduor, a lecturer at the university said peace building and conflict resolution is understood by many and the impact of conflict reflects in everyone affected thus enlightening the public is essential especially in bordering counties like Migori.
Dr. Oduor and Josphat Ogweno said with the design of the curriculum, they will attract students all over the world and hoped that they will be able to make a big contribution towards enhancing peace.
