Nyatike MP Tom Odege has called on proper assessment of regions affected by the heavy downpour experienced countrywide.

He was speaking within his constituency during Jamuhuri Day celebrations when he distributed relief food to thousands of flood victim.

He faulted the government for ignoring flood victims from Migori county.

Odege said residents of Kabuto and Nyora within Nyatike have always beeb hard hit by perennial flooding but more attention is given to the people of Nyando, Budalanag’i among other regions.

“Issuance of relief food will only come to end only if both the national and county governments draft permanent measures towards curbing disastrous flooding of the lowlands,” he said.

Odege added that construction of dams and relocating people from flood prone regions to highlands should be among the mitigation plans to be considered.

Agnes Ayacko, wife of Migori senator Ochillo Ayacko said the government should dispatch more relief food to Nyatike flood victims citing the magnitude of the disaster and the population affected.

Close to 600 families are currently camping and various rescue centers across Nyatike as river kuja continues to sweep across the villages causing mass destruction of crops and creating fear of a looming food shortage.
