Man dies at Migori GK Prison night after attempting escape

A man has died at Migori GK prison after he and two others escaped from the prison on Saturday.

The two prisoners escaped as Ranen Conference Seventh Day Adventist church led a sermon at the prison on Saturday.

The church services was to open an SDA branch at the prison for the prisoners  when the three prisoners scaled the perimeter wall and escaped.

Residents within Migori town, where the prison is located, were alerted by sounds of gunshots that prison warders shot in bid to scare out the escapees.

But two of the prisoners were arrested on Saturday along the banks of River Migori and taken back to the prison.

The third one was arrested Sunday around Lichota as he trekked towards Kuria

The deceased whose details police are yet to disclose is said to have developed excruciating pain later that night and was rushed to Migori County Referral Hospital.

Confirming the incident, Migori County police commandant Joseph Nthenge said the prisoner died while under going treatment at the hospital.

“The deceased was rushed to Migori County Referral hospital but died while undergoing treatment,” Nthenge said.

Nthenge however denied claims that the prisoner was tortured leading to the pains that later caused his death

He said investigations were on to ascertain the cause of the death adding that they were also waiting for results an autopsy to confirm the cause of the death.
