When the Education Cabinet Secretary Mr Ezekiel Machogu announced the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results last week, two cousins were not aware that they could top Homa Bay County.

For Shirley Ivy Singey (15), leading the entire county was a no mean fete and she never expected to emerge the top, scoring 418 marks to top the.

His cousin Daren Fletcher followed her closely, scoring 416 and becomi9ng the County’s second best in the national examination.

Although the results never found the duo off guard as all indicators pointed that they would definitely e3xell in the national examinations as they had been top in their school throughout the year.

“I want to dedicate the good result to my late brother who passed on while I was undertaking the exams.I had no idea that my brother had passed on and only came to realize after I had sat the exams. My parents made a good decision by not informing me as that would have deterred my success.”

“I would like to thank my parents for their efforts,” said the 15 year old girl who aspires to join Kenya High School. She aspires to pursue law once done with her Secondary education.

Fletcher on the other hand attributed the sterling preface to adequate preparation and composure during his stay at St Pauls Catholic Education Center in Homa Bay.

When the media visdited their home in Osingo villge in Sun East Sub County, the family who were mourning the death of their first born son could not hide their joy and carried the pair shoulder high as they celebrated the results.

According to, Mr Samuel Singeyi, Sherly’s father, her last born daughter had done the family proud despite the loss of his first born son.

“In spite the fact that I lost my son Collins Singeyi, the young girl has lifted our spirits and proved that she is an embodiment of resilience and hard work,” he said while calling on the government not to sideline students from private schools during the form one selection exercise that kicks off in JANUARY.

There is this notion that the ministry of education doesn’t favor students from private school. I’m appealing to the government to give equal chance to the students based on their capabiliy and their school of choice.

I did conceal the information from her and when I went to pick her from school, she was in verfy high spirits and kept asking me if Collins was fine. We held a birthday party for the late brother despite the trying moment we were going through.

Mrs Lynet Singey, termed the daughter’s success as a blessing in disguise despite the pain of losing her first born son

“She has made us happy and we are proud despite the loss we are current fauiling. I Know she is capable and will pursue her dream career,” she told journalists.

Mrs Dorothy Akeyo, mother to Daren Fletcher also expressed joy and hopes tghat son will secure a chance at Alliance High School and later pursue a course in medicine.

“We don’t take the sucess for granted. They have done their best and as a family we are ready to continue supporting the students through high School.”

She called on parents to create time for their children during the festive season and not allow them indulge in activities that can make them stray.
