Homa Bay governor Cyprian Awiti today laid off 650 casual workers in a move that has shocked the county’s residents.

Awiti said this was needed to cut on the county’s huge wage bill depriving the development sector of money to complete his projects.

Speaking to the press in Homa Bay town, Governor Awiti said the county had employed more people than it need.

“We can’t be deterred from realising our development agenda just because people want to earn salaries and wages,” Awiti said.

He said that streamlining was necessary and added that a staff audit would be conducted and non-performers will be sent home.

“We will ensure lazy staff members are laid off,” Awiti said.

Governor Awiti is currently battling a court case filed by Oyugi Magwanga  challenging his election for the second term.
