A woman from Uriri committed suicide by drowning in river Kuja for failing to pay Sh9,000 loan she took from a woman group.

Sylvia Aluoch had secured the soft loan from a local Sacco and was under pressure to pay the money prompting her to jump into the river after her colleagues told her off.

Uriri police commander Peter Njoroge said the victim from Ongito village took the loan from Wabongo B Group and during a merry-go-round failed to pay up.

Njoroge said her colleagues threatened to auction her goods to raise the money.

“She was carried on a motorbike by one of the group members whom she requested to alight and pick her leso which had dropped. When the motorbike stopped she jumped off and dived into River Kuja and was carried away by the waters,” explained the police chief.

Search for the body is still underway.
