Migori town residents have called on the government to move with speed and address issues of an open sewer system at Migori Teachers Training College.

The TTC is grappling with improper sewer disposal where raw sewage flow openly from several ablution block, to the neighbouring Migori Primary School, Migori Day Secondary School, neighbouring farms and into River Migori.

Residents of Migori town in Suna West said said the open sewer which has been running for over the past six month posed a health risk to them.

They said they had tried raising the issue with the schools management through the Principal Mary Claire Indire but no action was being taken.

“We have severally complained to authorities and the institution to no avail, we need this fixed,” Kennedy Odongo, a resident of Oruba said.

“We have to pass through paddles of raw sewerage when going home, Migori town have been faced with months of water shortage which has seen us use raw sewage through river Migori,” Martin Akede said.

The two said they will move to court to compel government to act on the sewerage.

Suna West sub-county public health officer Jacob Angira said they had issued a 21 days notice, which had since expired, to the TTC repair their sewerage.

Another Public Health Officer Halima Adhiambo, said they are yet to follow up on the matter.

“We will offer a concrete statement later over the matter as we have to double check the matter,”said Adhiambo.

Migori NEMA officer Juddy Arieko said she was out of Migori town until Friday when she can comment on the matter.

On Wednesday, the institutions college principal Mary Claire Indire refused to address the press insisting she was busy with the examination and locked herself in her office.
