A 29 years old Nyatike man yesterday afternoon drowned in a deep quarry at Otati village while fetching water.

Davis Owigo was fetching water from the quarry when he slithered and drowned, Central Karungu chief Isack Bungu said.

“He was trying to recover his phone that had dropped in the water, when he accidentally slipped into the quarry,” Bungu said.

He said other two people who were in company of the deceased unsuccessfully tried to rescue him.

Bungu said the locals in collaboration with the provincial administration in the area have managed to recover the body after an hours of search and it has been taken to St. Camilus hospital mortuary.

Assistant County Commissioner in charge of Sori division James Mabeya said they are looking for the contractor that excavated the quarry while mining the murram for road construction.
