Nyatike fishermen raise Sh540,000 to release 18 colleague arrested by Tanzanians

Fishermen from Muhuru Bay in Nyatike were forced to raise Sh540,000 as ‘fine’ to release their eighteen colleagues arrested in Lake Victoria waters by Tanzania officials.

The group was seized from Mugabo and Kibro beaches and taken to Sota in Tanzania where they were detained for five days with each paying at least Sh30,000 o be released.

Kibro Beach Management Unit Chairman John Maulidi told Migori News they have been wondering if there is government has they suffered constant harassment from Uganda and Tanzania officials.

“It is only last month when our colleague was found dead around Migingo Island after being arrested by Tanzanians,” he said.

The 23-year-old fisherman was among two others who were on a fishing expedition when they were ambushed on February 7.
