Nyatike sub-county residents living along the Lake Victoria beaches have asked government to come and kill rogue hippos terrorising them.

On Saturday dawn at Kuwet beach, Odondi Ogolla lost his left arm after a hippo bite it off.

Ogolla was rowing a boat to check fishing lines when a group of five hippos attacked him forcing him to try and swim towards the shore.

Area chief Jim Kawa said despite colleagues trying to save him by making noise on the beach and throwing stones, the animals attacked him and destroyed the boat.

“The lower part of the arm got lost in the water, he managed to swim to safety and was taken to Migori Level Four Hospital,” Kawa said.

Residents are now calling for Kenya Wildlife Society to help handle the animals which also destroy their crops.
