Uriri Member of Parliament Mark Nyamita has said he is organizing a prayer day in his constituency emulating the national one.

Nyamita said the prayer day set for August this year will bring together religious leaders to help in setting agenda for elected leaders in Uriri.

“Religious leaders always pray for politicians during campaigns and these prayer meeting will form the basis of taking active part in development,” he said.

The MP said he wanted religious leaders not to be used by politicians on getting elected only but also help in shaping the development agenda.

Nyamita also said he will sponsor a bill at the national assembly that will see churches allocated 2% to sponsor development projects.

“The country’s development was set off by Christian missionaries who helped built schools, hospitals and infrastructures still enjoyed to date, we need to revive that back,” Nyamita said.

He added, “This country always has national prayer days and we often turn to preachers during campaigns and for dialogue as politicians, we don’t need to leave religion out of development,” Nyamita said.

His sentiments were shared by South Kanyamkago MCA Graham Kagali and East Kanyamkago MCA Bon Oremo.

“As elected leaders we have been forced to organise fund raising events to help built churches, we need to change that to include a formal way to formalise development from government,” Kagali said.

Oremo challenged religious leaders across the country to form a caucus to help push through the move to amend development kitties to help fund their projects.
