Migori plans to plant at least over 1.2 million trees before the year  2022 to boost forest cover.

Kenya Forest Services Head of Conservancy in Nyanza region Dedan Nderitu said the county has a low forest cover at 0.64 per cent and the number of gazette areas is slightly over 1,000 hectares.

“ We have a number of hill tops, the Government is planning to gazette more hills to be either under the National Government or County Government to be as county government forest,” Said Ndaritu.

 He was speaking at Otacho Hills in Suna East during a tree planting exercise.

KFS Chief Economist Samuel Mureithi low forest cover has caused erosion.

Migori Chief Officer in the department of Environment and Disaster management said Joshua Ngwala said that Migori County is doing its part to ensure the country achieve his goal on it 10 per forest coverage by establishing tree nurseries.
