Migori county government launches secondary scholarship

Bright but needy students from Migori will benefit from county government scholarship programme launched to offer comprehensive high school education support.

The programme targets pupils who excelled in the 2014 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (K.C.P.E.) from every sub county by this year.

“Parents or guardians who come from humble backgrounds and are financially needy backgrounds are requested to collect scholarship application forms at nearest Ward Units and apply for the scholarship,” Migori Governor Okoth Obado said in a press statement.

According to Obado, the minimum marks for eligibility for candidates is 350 except for the few exception where the County Scholarship Selection Board ( CSSB) may lower the cut off points as guided by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

Preferential treatment will be given “If it is established that the standards were low and that going by this cut off may exclude deserving applicants and candidates’ from poorer backgrounds.”

Orphans, pupils whose parents are physically or mentally, living with HIV/AIDS, chronic illness and those affected by natural disasters will get higher priority.

Shortlisted students will be invited for interviews which will be conducted by the County Scholarship Selection Board (CSSB).

The board will be headed by ministry of education executive,, chief officer, director and other stakeholders.

But Clement Ayungo, the National Youth Council Chairman said youths have been locked out from the board and representative picked which will create favouritism in selection.

“What is youth representative? We have national youth council leadership in place, bwana governor you must learn to respect other institutions. NYC is mandated to represent youths through an act of parliament. Why recognize unions and undermine them?” he posed
