Kuria politicians have been accused of frustrating efforts by area security officials to end cattle rustling and other cases of insecurity.

Kegonga Sub County Deputy County Commissioner Wesley Koech, said efforts to curb insecurity have often been met by resistance from local political leaders.

He accused them of shielding suspected criminals behind rising cases of cattle rustling and armed robbery in the region.

“For security to be realised in this region, we must work together. You cannot leave everything to the police,” said Mr Koech.

He was speaking in Kegonga Primary during the 54th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Kegonga primary school grounds.

Ahmed Abdikadir, the Kuria East Officer Commanding Police Division shared the same sentiments.

“Some politicians have chosen not to cooperate with the police hence making our work difficult. Some of the notorious criminals are known to some MCAs who do not want to reveal them,” Abdikadir said.

The two sounded warning to those who are hell bent on committing acts of lawlessness, appealing to those with illegal firearms to surrender them.

Nyabasi East MCA Mwita Motangi, the only political leader who attended the celebrations, shared the same sentiments with the security officials and called on his fellow leaders to come out strongly against insecurity in the region.

“The problem of insecurity needs concerted effort from all leaders. The problem is when local leaders fail to cooperate with the police hence making it hard to ensure security,” said Motangi.
