Police in Rongo are holding a 30 years od man from Gwassi in Homa Bay for trying to marry a 16 years old form two student.

The plan to marry off the minor secretly blew off when the minor’s uncle, 43 years old, and the suspect took the girl to Rongo sub-county hospital.

“The two came to check their HIV status at the hospital before the man could pick away his bribe,” Sophie Odumo, an activist said.

She said medics at the hospital were alarmed by the request from two men and a minor.

They led a citizen arrest of the two suspects who were taken to Kamagambo police post.

“The jagam, who was selling off the minor to the man was an uncle. The two had spent the night at his home,” Odumo said.

The parents on getting wind of the arrest managed to escape, Rongo police boss Peter Okiring’ said.

“We have launched a manhunt for them to help in investigations as they were aware their daughter was to be married off. The minor said the mother and father did not object,” Okiring’ said.

The suspect, Gift Okello said he had inquired about getting a wife and when one was available in Rongo he made the journey for marriage.
