Government will buy 56 tons of milled rice every week from Nyatike farmers to help boost production, ending months of outcry.

The farmers are drawn from Lower Kuja Irrigation scheme project, and they will sell their rice to the Kenya National Trade Corporation (KNTC).

Corporation Regional depot Sales manager Nina Janet, said they will offer farmers the best prices to end exploitation by middlemen.

“Based on the agreement, we expect to purchase their milled grade 1 rice at Sh 95 per Kg  and  Sh 145 for Pasmati rice(pishori). We Will be purchasing upto  56 tons of milled rice weekly,” she said.

Sagama farmers Union chairman John Olawo lauded the move which followed a presidential directive earlier on January.

“We feel motivated by the initiative and it will end us being exploited by middlemen who bought our rice at a paltry Sh35 before repackaging and making a kill from our sweat,” Olawo said.
