Electricity, water shortage stall services at Migori Referral Hospital

Health services at Migori Referral Hospital have stalled over huge electricity bill and water shortage for the past one week.

The hospital had power disconnected over Sh700,00 bill by Kenya Power and has seen pipes delivering water to the hospital stall.

Women delivering and patients seeking operation, screening and even testing services have been forced to be referred to the neighboring Ombo Mission Hospital after the largest health facility ran out drugs.

Patients have resorted to using candles at night and have their relatives bring water for them to the hospital.

Maryanne Apondi, who is taking care of her daughter at the hospital told Migori News she has been forced to carry water from home to the hospital.

“We have to seek drugs from outside the public health facility, where we pay a lot of money. This is the only health facility that we have and can depend on in the county; other private hospitals are quite expensive,” she said.

County Director Donald Jaleny said they need to acquire a stand by generator.

Migori health sector had an allocation of Sh600 million this financial year that was meant to upgrade the hospital as well as ensure drugs were available for the public.

Despite employing others health officers’ cases of under staffing and health officers downing their tools due to lack of better pay have been common within the county.
