CORONAVIRUS: Hiked fare, few travellers hit Matatu sector over measures

Matatu operators in Migori have cried the Governments move to compel them carry a few passengers to help fight the dreaded Corona virus.

The transporters from various routes have said that they will adhere to carrying the required passengers but will raise the fare so as to maximize on the profit and help them remain into operations.

David Omollo who plies the Kisumu-Migori route said that the situation will be worse for the operators as it will push them out of business.

He wanted the Government to reduce the fuel prices in order to help them balance their profits in the busy matatu business.

He added that many commuters were stranded after the fares from Migori to Kisumu were hiked from 600 to 1000 and inconvenienced travelling plans for some of the commuters.

Jared Oketch chairman of probox operators on busy Migori-Nyatike-Karungu route said the situation will be worse if the Government does not reduce the price of the petrol on the pumps.

He said his members will adhere to carrying the required passengers but must hike the fares in order to make profit and keep them into business.

Many operators in Migori have raised the fare and also made sure that they have enough sanitizers in their vehicles in order to protect their passengers from the dreaded Corona virus that has caused panic across the globe.
