Migori senator Ochillo Ayacko has called on governor Okoth Obado to account for close to Sh500million used to fight Covid 19 before declaring the county virus free.

Ayacko said recent remarks by the governor that residents should not wear face masks and tough restrictions placed to ease spread of virus ignored were illegal.

“Before a place is declared Covid 19 free, health officials should be included to follow rules placed by WHO. It is only the national government which can declare that,” Ayacko said.

According to the senator, Migori county allocated Sh40m to fight the virus while the national government issued Sh178million, with donor funding reaching Sh295million

Ayacko said Obado’s statement was not only misleading and false, but an insult to residents who are grappling with where millions allocated to fund the fight against the virus went to.

“What i have gathered for residents is that the effect of the money has not been felt on the grounds with even frontline worklers complaining,” Ayacko said.

He was speaking to Migori News during a special interview at his home in Migori town.

A week ago, while addressing the press from his home in Rapogi, Migori governor Okoth Obado claimed that Migori is Covid 19 free and residents should not be wearing face masks.

He also declared that all markets which were closed earlier will be re-opened.

“You see today I am not wearing a facemasks because I have looked at the country and I have seen that /god has blessed us and removed this issue of Covid 19,” Obado said.

Obado said he was castigating Tanzanians for laxity in controlling the virus earlier, but Migori will follow suit to normalize operation by opening markets and going to the market.

“We have seen our god given immunity has assisted us, if the virus will come in the second wave we may reconsider,” he said.

He said that in February he suspected of having Covid 19 after experiencing coughing symptoms but he was healed.
