MP Owino Gives Awendo Town First Police Station Since Independence

For the first since Kenya got independence in 1963, Awendo town residents got their first police station last Friday.

Awendo MP Walter Owino led official opening of the station before handing it over to Nyanza region police commander Manase Musyoka and Migori police commander Mark Wanjala.

“This is a major milestone because for the first time since independence Awendo town residents and traders will be able to seek services of a police station within town and not inside Sony Sugar company,” Owino said.

He said the station was donated by the company when they started operation in the area in 1976 but rapid population growth of Awendo town has seen it becoming harder for the small station to serve residents.

The Awendo NG-CDF kitty started building the new police station a year ago.

“To boost security further, we will create seven high mast security flood rights across town to help tackle insecurity further,” he said.

Musyoka lauded the move saying when he was the Migori County Commander Awendo town residents were good at coordinating with police to tackle runaway insecurity.

But in 2017, Samuel Okech Onyango under case number ELCC/61/2017 in Migori High Court stopped access of a new Awendo police station saying the station was built on a private land.
