Arsonists burn a dormitory at Ranen Adventist Schools

Another fire incident has gutted down all dormitories at Ranen Adventist Schools last Thursday, forcing over 200 to spend their nights in cold.

Two students who tried to salvage their belongings suffered injuries during the melee even though the administration told Migori News they are out of danger.

The institution’s principal Peter Owari said property worth more than Sh10 million was destroyed in the fire which started around 8pm when students had gone for preps.

Owari said earlier during the day two attempted arson fires were put off after a 13-year-old Class Five wanted to burn the dormitory before the last incident.

“The boy was seen lighting a match stick at around four in the morning and a fire started from his bed, but it was contained. Later at around nine in same morning, we sensed smoke coming out from the dormitory but we managed to run and put it off before causing any greater damage,” he said.

Owari said they found matches in the boy’s pocket but was at pain to explain if the boy was still in the compound.

“The boy had been sent home and escorted by one of the teachers who only accompanied him to Kanga Shopping Center, leaving him to go home alone,” a teacher said.

The child’s parents live in Rongo, about 15 kilometers from Kanga.

Police in Awendo said they have already started investigations into all the incidences that may have built-up to the inferno.

“We cannot rule out the allegations that there was someone who may have started the fire, but for now, it will be too early to speculate over the cause,” said Awendo OCPD Daniel Kinyua.
