Anti-FGM drive: 12 people, 5 circumcisers arrested in Kuria West

Twelve people including five circumcisers linked to female genital mutilation in Kuria region have been arrested by the police in the ongoing crackdown on FGM that began this week Friday ahead of the outlawed exercise.

Among the twelve people who are in police custody are eight people from Kuria West sub county who were arrested today afternoon while they were having FGM commissioning ceremony at Kamange village in Bukira central location.

Speaking to Migori News,Kuria West sub county OCDP,Mr.Evance Wanyonyi said the eight suspect were feasting in the house of one of the female circumcisers when the police stormed the ceremony and arrested them.

He said among the people arrested during the todays raid were two circumcisers, Kuria West sub county chairman council of elders, among others.

Mr.Wanyonyi said a young girl who was to officially open the exercise was rescued by the police and has been taken to Komotobo children home.

The OCPD said other fours suspects including three circumcisers were arrested on Saturday this week in Kuria East Sub County while there were planning to launch the FGM exercise.

He added that the twelve suspects will be arraigned in Kehancha law court as they pursue other suspects who escaped to Tanzania.

Meanwhile he said they have an elaborate plan to ensure that there is no girl that shall undergo the outlawed exercise this year.

Mr.Wanyonyi said the security personnel have been receiving a lot of threats from the community who are claiming that they will bewitch them for interfering with the exercise, utterances that has cast fear among some of his officers; however he said they will not relent.
