Some 352 orphaned and vulnerable students in Migori County will next week benefit from Sh7.7 million in bursaries from the national government through Presidential bursary.
The money, which will be distributed across all the eight constituencies of the county, is expected to assist in paying fees for students to enable them complete their education.
Speaking in Migori town, Migori County Children County Coordinator John Odinya says they had chosen the group to benefit from the pilot program after carefully considering their needs, academic performances and backgrounds.
“The applications were very many and we could not help all of them. However, we are glad that we will be able to help the few we have chosen,” he said.
He said that the money will be distributed equally to all the eight constituencies where each constituency will be able to benefit from Sh971, 000.
This, he said will see 44 needy students from each of the eight constituencies benefit from the allocations which will be sent directly to school.

On the allocation, Odinya said that students in boarding schools will each get Sh30, 000 while their counterparts in primary school will each get Sh15, 000 per student.
“We hope that this will go a long way in helping uplift the education standards in the county. We are keen to ensure that no child stay at home because of lack of school fees,” he said.
He however regretted that his office had not been able to help all those who had applied for the bursaries and called on other institutions to come up with programs that can help pay fees for needy students.
He also called on the beneficiaries of the program to put more effort in their work while at school to get grades that will enable them to proceed to the university.
