Close to 300 families were yesterday left stranded after their homes were submerged by floods in Nyatike amid a heavy downpour.
Most affected areas are at Nyora and Angugo villages in Kakelo Kakoth sub-location.
Elizabeth Akinyi, 60, said her house collapsed and said villagers were calling for Migori county government to help them.
She said while the country I observing curfew and social distance to fight Covid 19, the area has been disrupted as they are forced to share space in overcrowded areas and spend night in the cold.
“Have had about a disease called corona which is spread from person to person or being close to someone who has the virus, am afraid of going to a camp so I had to stay here until the Government will come for my help,” Said Akinyi.
According to Kakelo kakoth assistant chief Sospeter Oloo said of the affected, 154 were at Nyora Village, 107 at Konyango village and 70 at Kabuto village.
“Our worry is getting a good place to host the families, especially at this time that we are trying to fight congestion,” he said.
He asked for immediate action to save the worsening situation.
County Environment and Disaster Management executive Elizabeth Ochaye said government directives against Covid 19 like avoiding mass gathering has made taking help to be difficult.
“We are encouraging them to move to other homes temporarily as we are looking into the way we can supporting the affected families,” she said.
Her chief officer Joshua Ngwala said that as a department they will hold a disaster meeting to tackle the flood menace.
